Linux KDE Installation Issues
« on: June 21, 2012, 04:56:12 PM »
Hi,

I installed v.17 on Fedora 64-bit KDE spin and there are a number of limitations:
  • No entry is made in the Applications KDE menu
  • Manually adding an entry to the KDE panel for bin/vs you get no icon and the vs.xpm is not being accepted as a valid icon
  • When SlickEdit is running the icon only taskbar shows no icon (not sure about the standard task manager)

If Linux is a supported platform then these things should really work "out of the box". Thanks.

Stuart

Thanks for the report.  I'm not seeing this on Ubuntu with the KDE desktop, so I'll pull up a FC image and check it out.

OK, thanks for looking into it. I am running Fedora 17 but I believe I saw the same limitations on earlier Fedora KDE releases.

I can't reproduce it on a clean FC 17 KDE spin image I installed this morning.

To be clear, (1) from your original message is correct.  Slickedit is not adding itself to the application menu automatically.

For (2) I get the icon if I manually add the app.  Also, if I browse over to the slickedit install directory, and start it from the file manager,  the icon in the task manager looks good, and an entry for slickedit shows up in the desktop folder view, with the icon in place.

For (3) I'm seeing the icon in both the standard task manager in the bottom panel, and in the icon-only manager widget I dragged onto the desktop.

Out of curiosity, what do you see if you go the the bin directory of the slickedit install, and double click on vs.xpm?  Should just be the slickedit icon in whatever your default image viewer is.

Thanks for trying this Patrick. We aren't getting the same behavior. Here's what I see:

If I click on vs.xpm it shows up fine in Gwenviewer.

When I created a Panel icon manually and set it to vs and then set the icon to vs.xpm it would show up blank in the Panel. When I then set the icon to a png I googled it worked in the Panel but still showed up blank in the icon-only taskbar when I ran it.

But if I first add SlickEdit to the Development menu and point it to vs.xpm file for the icon and then do Add to Favorites and Add to Panel it works fine: I get the right icon shown in Favorites, Panel, and in the icon only taskbar when it runs.

I can't explain this and it could just be a KDE glitch or something with the nVidia driver I'm using (instead of nouveau). Anyway, with the second approach the problem is solved here and maybe that will be useful for some other user.

Thanks again.
