B6: Linux: diff coloring expected?
« on: October 01, 2014, 11:55:59 am »
With VS 2014 I run a diff on a Makefile and I get strange coloring.  Is this expected behaviour?  I assume no, if not expected, is it a configuration problem or bug?  v2013 does not have this same problem.

System: Ubuntu x64

That definitely looks strange.  Do you get this in other files?  Can you send me the makefiles?

At first no, I did not notice it.  But now I see it on every file.

I did a little more testing so I could get you the file.
1. Turns out if I create a new file from the editor then diff, the problem does not exist.
2. If I copy the existing file I can edit it and save it and the problem exists.
3. I created the attached copy of a file.  Then copied it so I could try changing the file extension to something that has no color coding, "trace_copy2.h.old".  The problem does not exist.

I've attached a single file because I still see the problem when displaying a new file in the diff tree.  I hope this helps let me know if you need more.

Also, I checked and I am running Unity [3D] in case that matters.  I know in 2013 I have problems related to Unity-2D.

I made a copy of the file and modified it and diffed them, I'm afraid it looks fine.

I was able to take the file, drop it in a directory, then diff the directory.  It shows as a new file, then I just show the file.

Is there anything else I can provide to help get this problem tracked down?  It is really unusable in its current state.

Do you get this odd coloring outside the diff?

Are the ? chars really question marks or something that couldn't be displayed?

I do not get this coloring outside of the difftool.  Also, the '?' are actually question marks, the text is from a makefile.

What happens if you pick a different color scheme?  Just curious.

I changed the color coding from Silver to Iceburg and I still had the same problem.

If I send you something with some debug in it can you test it out?

Can you PM me an email address?  It will be a pretty large attachment.

Assuming I did it correctly you should have a PM with my email address to continue debugging the problem.

I do.  I'm trying to figure out what the best debug to put in is.
