V18: Terminal Font 8x12 under Windows 7
« on: November 25, 2014, 05:48:59 AM »
Had V18 first installed on Win XP, where I believe the Terminal 8x12 font worked. Now under Windows 7 I cannot get a decent monospaced font in V18. Among the Terminal fonts, the size changes only every few steps, like 9,10,11 are all the same and 12 is a whole lot larger. Is there any way to get my beloved Terminal 8x12 font back in V18 ? The Windows command windows have no problem displaying that font.

Regards,
Siggy

"Decent monospaced font".

I don't know how you define "decent", but I've been very happy with DejaVu Sans Mono. It's a fairly nice sans font that scales very well.  I like the similar char distinctions (0/O, l/1, etc.).  l was put onto it from this forum several years ago.

Personally I usually use Terminal 6 pt. It has some issues, but it's available everywhere, has nice tight vertical spacing and I find it very readable.

I know a lot of people like the Proggy fonts (http://www.proggyfonts.net/ ) too.

I use bitmap fonts on windows at times as well, and I don't know of any workaround.  Bring up terminal 8x12 in the windows font viewer, and it will only show point sizes for 12, 18, 14, 18, etc...  Either because the bitmap font only has glyphs defined for those sizes, or possibly because it's only defined at 12pt, and the others are the 12pt size scaled up by a round factor so it doesn't look horrible.  I'm not sure why Qt was reporting all of the other in-between font sizes.

Tim: I'm a fan of ProggySquare.  But it's also bitmap font that's only defined at 12pt size, so the scaling will burn your eyes if you try to make it bigger.

Also, check out thread " Topic: Old font mystery Terminal 10 pt." which was never answered.  Basically, Windows was picking weird Asian versions of Terminal 10 fonts and I had to get them out of the font directory.

Are you using SlickEdit V18 ? For me they also look the same with SlickEdit 7, which does not seem to use QT.

V19 (Before that V18).
What does your Terminal 10pt look like.  Smaller/Bigger completely different?

Terminal 10 looks a lot narrower/thinner while Terminal 12 looks a lot larger.
The font here: http://www.fonts2u.com/the-one-true-font-system-8x12-regular.font seems to look like Terminal 8x12 used to look like. I think this could be my solution unless I see some issues.

In my previous thread, I found removing some appXXX.fon font files from \windows\fonts forced slickedit to use the standard 8x12 terminal fonts.  Now why slickedit was using the app9xx.fon (east asian) fonts I never got an answer.
