Installed v19, now v18 is slooooow
« on: November 21, 2014, 10:12:03 PM »
I know that historically, there normally isn't any problem having multiple versions of SE installed. However, I just installed v19 2 days ago and, due to 2 bugs that are annoying me (posted about them in separate topics), I decided to go back to v18 for the time being.

Unfortunately, now v18 is slooooow to respond to anything. I have to wait 5 seconds from clicking somewhere in the editor for the cursor to move to that location, wait another 5 seconds for it to respond to key strokes, etc. I've tried rebooting, making sure nothing else is running, etc. Is it possible that v19 somehow hosed my v18?

Doh, think I figured this out right after I posted. I rebuilt my project tag files (which apparently had been updated by v19) and everything is much snappier. I guess I'm sort of surprised that v18 didn't realize the tag files were no longer the correct version and didn't force a rebuild, itself.

Still, happy to be back with a working editor.

I just retested and confirmed that v18.0.1 will automatically start background tagging to rebuild any workspace tag files that it can not read.  The database format did change slightly in version 19.

If you had left v19 running when you started v18, the slowness you were experiencing could have been on account of version 18 not being able to write to the already-locked tag file and constantly trying and failing to rebuild the workspace tag file.

I think I had closed 19, but it's possible I didn't. Or that v19 was still in the process of shutting some part of itself down... In any case, I'm happy v18 is working again.

Thanks!
