I've used Slick over remote desktop plenty.
Yes there is some lag, but it depends on how good your network is.
On a lan, I don't think you would notice keyboard delays.
On my relatively slow VPN over DSL, typing is fine, but you really start to notice lag from screen repainting delays.
The more scrolling, popups, animations, the worse it is of course.
Still, it is quite usable.
You have some control over this -- when creating the connection you can set performance things like color depth, visual styles, etc.
That being said, Microsoft remote desktop has much better performance than chrome remote desktop, or VNC.
