Windows Virtual Desktop

Has anyone tried SlickEdit with Windows Virtual Desktop or even Windows Remote Desktop.

Is there any lag with keypresses showing up?  If not, why not  - how could there not be a lag?

Microsoft expect to release WVD sometime this year.

I've used Slick over remote desktop plenty.
Yes there is some lag, but it depends on how good your network is.

On a lan, I don't think you would notice keyboard delays.
On my relatively slow VPN over DSL, typing is fine, but you really start to notice lag from screen repainting delays.
The more scrolling, popups, animations, the worse it is of course.
Still, it is quite usable.

You have some control over this -- when creating the connection you can set performance things like color depth, visual styles, etc.


That being said, Microsoft remote desktop has much better performance than chrome remote desktop, or VNC.

My experience is similar to jporkkahtc.  I use remote desktop to a remote windows box over a DSL connection.  Usually from a linux box using `rdesktop` as the client.  It's fine for editing, though I have turned off any automatic popups, and hid windows that update a lot (like Preview) because the latency for those can be worse than just typing.  I trigger function help manually with a keypress when I need it.

I also agree it does better than VNC, or other solutions I've tried that try to compress the X command stream.  I can actually get better performance forwarding a SlickEdit window from a Linux box to a windows desktop on the same network, and then doing a remote desktop to the windows box over my DSL connection than I can get just forwarding the SlickEdit window directly using plain forwarding or VNC.
