Open slickedit help to the community
« on: March 29, 2018, 10:08:17 PM »
Let the slick community edit the slickedit help documentation.
This would free up slickedit developers to write code and tests, and would make help a lot more helpful.

I've suggested a Wiki a few times but ideally it would be hosted on a SlickEdit server and they're not keen.
Are you interested because you've seen things in the help that you'd like to change/ update?  Maybe there should be a forum here for posting corrections or suggestions for the help file  - it might encourage people to report things.  I don't think it would save any slick developer time because they still have to write the original help and update it when something changes.

Did you have a particular tool in mind for doing it?  It seems you can scrape content out of the help file and copy it into a Word doc or OneNote and it keeps it's formatting but it's not especially easy to indicate which part of the help file it came from.  Using Word would allow you to highlight what you'd changed but most people probably don't have Word.

If anyone has submissions for improvements or enhancements to our documentation, you can create a case on our website: www.slickedit.com/supportcase
You can put "DOCUMENTATION SUBMISSION" in the short description if you don't need a reply.

You will get an automated reply (to the email address you have registered your product under) that you can reply to with an attachment if you have something emailable.
The automated email will also contain an upload link that accepts up to 50MB compressed files if you need to send something more significant than an email attachment.

We appreciate all feedback and will make changes suggested by our users, typically in the next build.

Its not just the content, but the container.
The current Qt help container has lots of bugs - and has been mentioned that Slick has been unable to resolve.

Of the most annoying problems:
Bookmarks: These sort of work, but they are always lost on updates - making them useless for me.
Sync With Contents: Mostly doesn't work - works for some pages, but lots of pages it doesn't work for.
Poor indexing and searching.
