Slickedit 2018 crashing on file reload
« on: January 30, 2019, 07:03:28 pm »
I have two files that are being updated by TeraTerm. I noticed that their sizes aren't always updated when I look in Windows Explorer (Win 7) so I press F5 to refresh and then they update. When I go back to SE, it will sometimes crash. It seems like it might have started happening when the files grew to > 1MB each, but maybe not. It might also have to do with the fact that TeraTerm still has the files open and is actively writing them.

Can you get this to happen on demand, and if so can you save a minidump?

Yes, happens easily. What is a minidump?

You attach with Visual Studio and save it from the debug menu.

These are text file that are written by the TeraTerm terminal app. The data comes into this app over USB and it is logging to these files. The files are still open and actively being written when I press F5 in Windows Explorer to update the data in the files (not sure why this is updated dynamically). Then I switch to SE and it attempts to reload and crash.

On the minidump, I'm not sure what you're looking for. I chose the debug option and the following was displayed in Visual Studio:
'vs.exe' (Win32): Loaded 'C:\Windows\System32\l3codeca.acm'. Cannot find or open the PDB file.

They are *.txt, and open as plain text in SlickEdit?

After you get the error message, under the Debug menu does it have "Save dump file as..." ?

Yes, they are *.txt and are indicated as plain text.
For some reason it's not happening right now. When it happens again, I'll save the dump file.

I'm using Visual Studio 2013 and there's no "Save dump file as" under the debug menu.
I'll attach my menu.

The menu item is only available once you are attached to a process.  Once the process has exited, it's gone.

OK, I'll watch for that.
Also, I'm now noticing that even after refreshing in Windows Explorer, seeing the file sizes change, and switching to SE, it sometimes doesn't load the new file. In fact, I'm having trouble getting it to load the updated file at all right now.

I don't know why it won't reload the files anymore. I'm attaching my load settings.
One thing I noticed is that the AutoReload setting where it compares files up to a given size (1953 KB in my case) is why the crash stopped happening. When I saw that the crash wasn't happening anymore, I looked at the file sizes and they were just over this amount. So it has something to do with reading the files while TeraTerm is writing them I believe.

I'm working back at home on my laptop now and the crash is still happening there.
When the crash occurred, I chose the debug option and it loaded in Visual Studio 2013.
However, I still don't see any "Save dump file as..." selection in the Debug menu.
I decided to choose "Attach to process" and there was no vs process to attach to.
I then chose to Start debugging anyway, and all that did was start a new instance of vs.
Any other suggestions?
