Fonts in X11 under Linux
« on: July 22, 2006, 01:15:57 AM »
Yeah, I know, there's already a topic for this... but for OSX.

I just wanted to add that we could also use the same thing under Linux.

I websearched for free fonts especially designed for use by programmers
(crisp and clearly-differentiated characters).  I found quite a few, though
many were for Windows.  None of the X11 fonts were worth much, at least
on my laptop. I run at a high resolution so smallish point sizes end up too
small to read.  But the fonts became _really_ ugly when scaled up.

This almost certainly has more to do with X11 than SlickEdit.  I don't know
how much work it would be for SE to develop their own X fonts, and they
probably don't have the expertise in-house.  But I can wish, eh?  Maybe SE
could research the not-free fonts to see if any would work well with SE.

I've been a SlickEdit user since Version 4, on Windows, and it always looks
great there.  Very readable.

Why not just use your Windows true type fonts under Linux?

Take Care.

Using Windows TT fonts in X under Linux would be great, except that, IIRC, SlickEdit doesn't anti-alias those fonts, so they don't look very good.  The same is true under OS X.

Starting with version 11, SlickEdit supports Xft on Linux platforms, which means that true-type fonts are properly anti-aliased.

Thanks Kohei.  I stand corrected.  What about OS X?

The OS X version still doesn't do anti-aliasing yet, since Mac OS X uses a different font handling mechanism.  We're still investigating how best to handle fonts on that platform.  I'm not really a Mac expert, so I can't really tell you at this point how easy or difficult that might be to improve our font support for Mac.

So did you find a good Windows TT font to use on Linux?  Luxi Mono 13pt is my favorite so far, but it doesn't cover unicode.
