I can't live without MDI. What to do?
« on: March 11, 2019, 03:40:22 PM »
Yesterday I purchased an upgrade to v23 SlickEdit 2018. I'm a long time Slick user. I've been using v17 since 2012 and v12 before that.  Now it looks as though the window management has radically changed. I suppose I should have tried an eval first, but Slick has always been good to me and I felt I owed for an update.

Now I find that the MDI way of working that I have come to rely on seems to be gone.

I've recently been opening three copies of Slick, each one with a different workspace.  My main project has two or 3 dozen files open.  The other two have a smaller set of files.  I constantly use "search in all buffers" and the three windows give me the right scopes for these searches.  This doesn't seem to be an encouraged way of working.

What can you in the community suggest?  What document or YouTube post or example should I consult?

Not sure if it will help but have you seen this
https://community.slickedit.com/index.php/topic,16451.0.html

Slickedit has some new commands save-named-state/ load-named-state, save-named-layout, load-named-layout and save-named-files/ load-named-files that might help.
The file manager can also remember sets of files.
In the find/ replace dialog you can right click and select a saved search expression that allows you to remember a group of files to search in.

I still haven't managed to understand what the old MDI scheme did better.
