shift-mouse click to select text is broken
« on: August 23, 2019, 03:32:04 PM »
In beta 2 if you try to select text by holding down the shift key and moving the cursor to a new location by left clicking with the mouse you don't get a text selection.  It looks like it is very briefly selected but then the selection disappears.  This works in v23.

See attached video clip.

Edit: this is on Windows 10

I can't reproduce this so far. Please post your user.cfg.xml. Maybe this requires certain option settings.

I will send it on Monday when I get back to work.  I just installed beta 2 at home and it seems to be working just fine as far as this issue is concerned.

I know others have complained about this before, as have I at least once: https://community.slickedit.com/index.php/topic,13929.msg54632.html#msg54632

I think I might have (finally) found an easy repro:
  • Ensure no current selection
  • Shift click - and you get a selection
  • Very slightly move the mouse.
  • <Poof> the selection disappears.
Seems any amount of motion clears the selection, even if the motion doesn't change the character clicked on.

For me, I have to very carefully hold the mouse still while clicking to get the selection that I want.

I still can't reproduce this. For step #3, I tried moving the mouse slowly or quickly. No luck.

I'm pretty bad with mouse and my mouse isn't a fancy one (some Microsoft mouse). I tried increasing the mouse pointer speed to the maximum. Still was pretty easy to select exactly what I wanted.

One thing I did notice with the OP problem. If any kind of popup help is displayed, you can't extend a selection with Shift+Click. There are a lot of numbers in the ascii-table. So its easy to hover over one and get the number popup.

Clark, keep the Shift and left mouse button still pressed while moving the mouse.
It seems that while clicking with shift pressed marks the area from the text cursor to the pointer (correctly), any further movement ignores shift state, thus changes the marking mode and starts marking from initial pointer position to current pointer position. Intuitive and useful would be keeping text cursor position as the beginning of marked area until the shift is released.

I use trackballs, so my clicking and pointer moving is totally independent, but with sensitive mouse or touchpad it is very hard to click without slight movement.

If I hold down the shift with the left mouse button and drag, I am seeing a weird issue. I'll have to narrow it down.

Holding down shift with left click and dragging just doesn't work.

Fixed for beta3

Will the fix also address the original issue which had nothing to do with dragging?  I see that the issue definitely does seem to be aggravated by the pop-ups.  Will that be addressed as well?

I never got the original issue where you can't create a selection in the first place. Although, this could be related to the Shift+Click and drag issue (accidental drag maybe)

The issue with a popup being up is also fixed for beta 3.

Good.  Thanks.  I will check out the fixes when beta 3 comes out.  This is definitely different behavior in v24.

This fixes the problem for me so far - its great.
In fact, it is how I realized I had accidentally started a B2 instance of slick instead of B3.

After using beta 3 for a while, I don't believe I've seen this issue repeat.
