[SE24.0.2.0] Install hangs in Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
« on: September 18, 2020, 11:14:08 am »
Hi,
I'm trying to install SlickEdit 24.0.2.0 for evaluation purposes but it hangs at "Running license manager to verify licensing...". I'm using
Code: [Select]
~/Downloads/se_24000200_linux64$ sudo ./vsinst to run the installer. OS is Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS (64-bit).
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers

Hmm, there was a bug in early releases of v24 with some window managers, where the license manager window would be created, but not displayed.  That should have been fixed in v24.0.2, so I'm not so sure that's it.

You can copy in the license manually though.  Go to the terminal you started the installer from, and ctrl-c it to stop it.   Copy your trial license to "DIR_YOU_INSTALLED_SE_TO/bin/slickedit.lic", and it should be set.

Thank you for the quick reply Patrick.
I was hoping that the missing dialog would give me a "Request Trial License" option, as I do not have a license. AFAIK that is the only way to get a trial license.

In case anyone is interested:
Code: [Select]
$ wmctrl -m
Name: GNOME Shell
Class: N/A
PID: N/A
Window manager's "showing the desktop" mode: N/A
I'm happy to run any tests the devs may have as I'm finding this to be a very reproduceable issue

Ah: sadly that doesn't seem to change much - I still don't see anything. I see /opt/slickedit/bin/vs & vs_exe in the process list but no actual IDE.

Please advise.

Update - I changed the window manager to SDDM & it worked as expected. I reverted the window manager to GDM3 & it still works. So success of a sort - although it will be unlikely that I can sell SlickEdit to my manager with this kind of issue.

Thanks again for your help

Update 2: when I said it was working that was only in terms of the Slickedit window being visible, beginning to use it as an actual editor I'm afraid it's quite unusable. It's got a glut of issues displaying menus & windows. And then SlickEdit freezes, always. I haven't actually got a project open yet - it hasn't been up long enough for me to start one.
Ctrl-Shift-Alt-F2 does nothing.
Ctrl-Shift-Alt-F9 generates a sequence of 3 dialogs:
 - file=cbrowser.ex offset=7407
 - file=layouts.ex offset=3818
 - C!dj file=content.ex offset=9135.
After this the app is unresponsive to all input & only
Code: [Select]
kill -9 <pid> can close it

Sadly - I cannot use it in its present state

How much memory does your machine have?

Ubuntu 18.0.4 is a very common Linux. These issues you are having are very odd. I ran Ubuntu 18 for year as my primary dev machine. Now I'm running LinuxMint 19 (only because my Ubuntu 18 install got trashed by an OS update). I also have an Ubuntu 18.0.4 VM I'm still using.

Cheers for the reply. My machine is:
Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
Memory: 15.3 GiB
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz × 8
Graphics: Intel® UHD Graphics (CML GT2)
GNOME: 3.28.2
OS Type: 64-bit
Disk: 502.0 GB
I'd consider that adequate - am I wrong ?

Thanks. Clearly not a memory issue. Just wanted to rule that out. Most likely graphics and/or window manager  issue.

Thanks for the reply. And for the clue by mentioning it might be a graphics issue.
I do have a Lenovo Thinkpad USB3 Pro dock attached to my (Lenovo) laptop - driving a DisplayLink monitor. When I disconnect the dock SlickEdit runs much better - the trial license dialog appears on startup & it doesn't crash within moments. I'm not running SlickEdit on the DisplayLink monitor & AFAIK no other apps have an issue because of it. It's a start at least.

It's been a long time since I've seen a graphic's driver issue. I was thinking this had something to do with using Wayland. SlickEdit is currently using Qt 4 which does not have Wayland support. I've been trying to test that theory but so far I can't create a machine or VM that is willing to run a Wayland window manager.

Couldn't get Ubuntu 18 to use Wayland but I just got Ubuntu 20 to use Wayland. SlickEdit works fine for me and the performance looks quite good.

FWIW: I'm not using Wayland.
It does sound like my DisplayLink monitor is causing an issue - for Qt4 or SlickEdit.
