Perhaps having a macro or menu item so that the user can restart the timer could also be useful?

But I would really like to be notified if the timer has stopped instead of suffering its side effects.

I'm thinking it would be reasonable to automatically start it after about one minute. That would give the user plenty of time to safely exit the editor if things are very unstable. Logging and a notification (toast message) would be good too.

I guess Unix is a little different than  windows. My stack gets written to /tmp/vsstack.<username>

Yes I found the same stack log in 2 locations:

config/25.0.1/logs/stack.log
/tmp/vsstack.<username>

Changes for v26:

Extra timer to automatically restart the main timer after 90 seconds (45 seconds on average)
Background searching automatically restarts the main timer if necessary
Message box and Slick-C stack indicates if the main timer was stopped
