This minimap performance fix is specific to macOS and won't happen on other platforms.

While it hasn't been a full-time workload, I've put it through the paces a fair amount in the last week, and it's much better. Syntax coloring could be a bit sappier, but it's way better than having SE wedged. I'll call it a success and a closed issue if your fix makes it into a hotfix or the next release.
