Can't shut SlickEdit up
« on: May 03, 2021, 01:57:51 pm »
I have three files open that were originally sourced from a zip file that was opened in Outlook.  When I closed the email, the temporary files used by the zip file were closed, and this prompted three dialog boxes from SlickEdit saying "Unable to save xxx  Path not found".  This wouldn't be so bad if the message only occurred once but it occurs every time I click on a window outside of SlickEdit.  These files are temporary and I have no wish to save them.  I also don't want SlickEdit to announce it can't save them every time I'm outside of the SE window.

Here's what's happening:

1) Click in another app's window (Chrome, Outlook, etc.)
2) Taskbar pops up along with SE's warning dialog box
3) Close SE's dialog box
4) Do steps 2 and 3 two more times
5) Go to step 1 and repeat forever

If I minimize SE, the dialog box repeatedly comes up and won't go away.

No luck so far. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Here's my test:

* vs junk.zip\junk.cpp
* switch to command prompt and "del junk.zip"
* switch back to slickedit. I get prompted. I hit cancel on this dialog. At this point, SlickEdit changes the file to indicate it's modified so that users are prompted to save the file later.
* Switching away from SlickEdit and back to SlickEdit does not cause another auto-restore prompt.

Try...

1) Open the zip file in an explorer window.  This should show "Extract" under "Compressed Folder Tools".
2) Double click the source file to load it into SE.
3) Close the Explorer window.
4) Abject misery...

Do you have auto-save enabled?

Yes, as well as Save Files on Loss of Focus.  Electricity is glitchy here and it saved me more than once.

Based on the message box you are seeing, I suspect this is the Save Files on Lost of Focus happening.  The question that I then have is why it is trying to save these files, because it should only be trying to save them if they were modified.  Do you also have a File Load option like "Expand tabs to spaces" enabled that might have modified the file, or did you make modifications yourself to the files that you are prompted about?

Normally, opening a file from a zip file would open the file as read-only, but because of the way the zip files are being temporarily expanded, the files look like a regular file system file.

The initial Auto reload prompt changes the file status to modified. See my post.

The problem is definitely the save files on lost focus feature. It needs to fail silently like autosave.
