Underlines in RegEx tool

I was trying to examine a regex in the regex tool.
I tried zooming in on the text and noticed that the underlining is a pattern, and the pattern is a bit weird and changes with font zoom level.
See the attached.

The 1st case is what got me interested since the pattern changes from left to right - I was wondering if this was somehow intentional and indicated something about the match (I don't think so).


My font for dialog and editor windows is Consolas 10, on Windows 10.
