Is there any way to halt a long search?

Long searches are best done with 'search in background' (Foreground search unchecked) ) which in turn can be easily stopped by 'stop-search' command on cmdline or by (re-)invoking the search dialog where the 'Stop' button is enabled when a bg search is running.

To break a fg search you could use the 'SHIFT-CTRL-ALT-F2' magic keycombination to break the running macro command.
