We've already described how incremental search can be used to highlight matches as you type (
click here). After initiating an incremental search, special shortcut keys let you move forward and backward easily.
To search forward incrementally, use the
i_search command (
Ctrl+S). To search in reverse, use the
reverse_i_search command (
Ctrl+R). If you initially start searching forward with Ctrl+S and decide to search backward, Ctrl+R will begin searching backward. The opposite applies if you start searching backward and decide to search forward: just use Ctrl+S. In both cases, your search string is preserved.
