What font do you use?
« on: June 03, 2008, 09:02:00 am »
I am in the middle of regular fonts crisis. I am obsessively looking for a new programmers font  ;D Any suggestions?

Depending on your system actually to choice fonts. I am now using Dejavu, which is a very good font to display codes.

Dejavu is available in Linux system, but this is free to use in windows as well.

You're right. I forgot to mention I am talking about Windows.
Thanks for the tip, but I already have Dejavu. I guess its kinda subjective, but I think it's not dense enough. I mean it barely leaves space between the lines, but lives much space between the letters. Same problem with Bistream Vera and Liberation (btw, Liberation is a new family of fonts from RedHat, similar to Dejavu - you may what to try it).
I guess the perfect font for me would be Consolas 10.5 (10 is too small and 11 is too big), but such thing does not exist  :-\

I prefer raster font with bold style support. So I made this font by myself ;D. Upper is 8x16, lower is 7x14.

That's not bad, but I prefer the Proggy Clean font from http://www.proggyfonts.com/.  I've used it for a long time now and I think it's great in SlickEdit.  Over the years I've upped my preferred point size every now and again, as my eyes get older, but even the smallest is readable.

BinCalc in awesome by the way, thanks for such a useful tool.

I am familiar with Proggy Clean. The problem with it is that it's 10th and 12th sizes are too small for 1280x1024 and 16th is too big for it.

There are three that regularly come up (in addition to the Proggy set):

pragmata - not at all free, but well loved
consolas  - M$, but a fabulous g
Envy Code R - from Damien Guard (his web site).  he's now asking for donations, and rightly so.

@chrisant
I am familiar with bot Bistream Vera and the link you provided. Btw, Redhat has released a new family of fonts called Libertion - google it and you'll find plenty of links. It is similar to Bitstream Vera, so you may like it.

@hs2
Thanks for the link. I picked a couple of nice schemes from there  ;D

@buggyfunbunny
I wish pragmata was for free. Actually I am anxious to try it for quiet some time, but paying 90EUR is way too much.
I am familiar with consolas and like it. One thing I don't like about it is that it's 11th size is significantly bigger than 10th.
As for Envy Code R, I didn't see it before. It's nice, although not a dream that came true. I do love Droid Sans Mono font I found via Demian's web-site. Thanks a lot for posting the references.

Envy Code R - from Damien Guard (his web site).  he's now asking for donations, and rightly so.
The donations are just to try and help cover the $699 cost for FontLab which was required to take the font "to the next level".

In the almost impossible event that donations reach that level I'll switch it off.
