13.0.1??
« on: June 19, 2008, 12:05:15 PM »
So, the hotfix window says it's for 13.0.1.  The Updates window still shows SE 2008.  Following the breadcrumbs leads to an msi for 13000000001.
Is it safe to go in the water?  No announcement?

So, ok.  I'll just install it to another directory.  But, noooooo.  It goes right ahead.  Looks like it installed over 13.0.  When it runs, throws errors about macros from the 12.0.3 install directory.  Then says that it's unlicensed, and exits.  Folks...........

So, read the Announcement from Jason (guess it's ok to go in the water).  Downloaded a new copy of the msi.  It still went off on its own.  Didn't ask me where I wanted it to go.  Sent up the Repair page (for 13.0.1), which I chose.  It created a new icon on the Desktop, Slickedit 2008.   It put the program into C:\Program Files\slickedit 2008.  The 13.0 is in c:\programs\se13.  I never use Program Files (spaces in directory names, and all that).  The NEW icon is still referencing 13.0.0.  So I've removed 13.0.1 and will try again.  Sigh.

My experience was different:

The 13.0.1 update is not labeled on the web site, so I wasn't sure whether I was downloading 13.0.1 or not (no harm, just rather confusing).

When I ran the .MSI file, it gave me the option to Browse to a folder to install it in.  I chose a folder and clicked Next and let the installation finish.  At the end it said it had successfully installed.

Only, the folder is empty.  :P  I scanned my entire hard drive:  it only found two vs.exe files (in other directories where I had copied them to for testing purposes), both of which are from 3/27/2008.

Is there an installer log file that I can look at and/or send?

I'll uninstall and then try reinstalling.

The way it's supposed to work when you have SlickEdit 2008 (13.0.0) and you install 13.0.1 :
- If you use the default C:\Program Files\SlickEdit 2008 directory (or the same directory where 13.0.0 is installed), it will warn you you're going to do an "upgrade" installation. 13.0.0 will be removed and 13.0.1 put in the same location.
- If you choose a different directory (Say C:\Program Files\SE13.0.1 ) then the installer will inform you you're about to do a side-by-side installation, and 13.0.0 will remain installed. Desktop icons and quick launch shortcuts will point to the new 13.0.1 location.

What is the information in your add/remove programs page? Do you have both "SlickEdit 2008 (13.0.0)" and "SlickEdit 2008 (13.0.1)" in the list?

Where did they actually get installed?
- On Windows XP / Server 2003 : Go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Select the SlickEdit entry that you're interested in. Click the "Click here for support information" hyperlink. In the popup window, note the path to the Readme.

- On Vista: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features. Make sure the information is displayed in "Details" view. Right click on the "Name" column header, and select "More..." from the context menu. Check the boxes for "Location" and "Readme", and click OK. That information will now be in the Programs and Features detail view.

And as a follow-up note, when an installer "goes off on it's own", that's because you're double-clicking the .msi for a product and version that is already installed. But it is *not* supposed to work that way. What is supposed to happen is that it will bring up the the "Change, repair, remove" installer dialog. It should only rush headlong into a repair installation (with no dialog) if you've selected "Repair" from the add/remove programs control panel (or you've launched msiexec with the /qn switch from the command line). But this is not the first time I've seen Windows installer misbehave.

SE 2008 13.0.0 had been previously installed to c:\Slick_Unmodified.
Control Panel | Programs and Features listed SlickEdit 2008.

I installed SE 2008 13.0.1 to c:\Slick, and it said it was successful.
Control Panel | Programs and Features still listed only one SlickEdit 2008 entry; there was no new entry.
The c:\Slick directory was empty.

I don't know what happened, so I uninstalled the 2008 entry, and reinstalled 2008 13.0.1.
It worked the second time.

AFAICT all seems well now.  /shrug
No worries.  :)

For those having the install issue, are you on XP or Vista. I've installed various builds of v13.0.1 at lest 50 times and had no difficulty and have both "SlickEdit 2008 (13.0.0)" and "SlickEdit 2008 (13.0.1)" listed in the "Add or Remove Programs" dialog. I'm still running XP.

Even if the website doesn't say, you should always be able to tell the full version from the filename. We leave the dots out and use two digits for each version number, so this should be "13000100".

Also, it's customary for us to use a "soft launch" with a new release. We want to get some feedback from the early adopters in case there are problems before we put out a formal notice or an announcement via the update manager.

My apologies for any inconvenience you have experienced.
