The way it's supposed to work when you have SlickEdit 2008 (13.0.0) and you install 13.0.1 :
- If you use the default C:\Program Files\SlickEdit 2008 directory (or the same directory where 13.0.0 is installed), it will warn you you're going to do an "upgrade" installation. 13.0.0 will be removed and 13.0.1 put in the same location.
- If you choose a different directory (Say C:\Program Files\SE13.0.1 ) then the installer will inform you you're about to do a side-by-side installation, and 13.0.0 will remain installed. Desktop icons and quick launch shortcuts will point to the new 13.0.1 location.
What is the information in your add/remove programs page? Do you have both "SlickEdit 2008 (13.0.0)" and "SlickEdit 2008 (13.0.1)" in the list?
Where did they actually get installed?
- On Windows XP / Server 2003 : Go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Select the SlickEdit entry that you're interested in. Click the "Click here for support information" hyperlink. In the popup window, note the path to the Readme.
- On Vista: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features. Make sure the information is displayed in "Details" view. Right click on the "Name" column header, and select "More..." from the context menu. Check the boxes for "Location" and "Readme", and click OK. That information will now be in the Programs and Features detail view.
And as a follow-up note, when an installer "goes off on it's own", that's because you're double-clicking the .msi for a product and version that is already installed. But it is *not* supposed to work that way. What is supposed to happen is that it will bring up the the "Change, repair, remove" installer dialog. It should only rush headlong into a repair installation (with no dialog) if you've selected "Repair" from the add/remove programs control panel (or you've launched msiexec with the /qn switch from the command line). But this is not the first time I've seen Windows installer misbehave.
