Which font do you use under Linux?
« on: July 24, 2008, 03:56:01 AM »
Hello,

I just wanted ask what other Linux developers use with slickedit.
I have tried couple of different fonts my self. I could not find anything that suits my eyes.

I am using 1600x1200 screen with chalkboard settings on windows at work.
I tried different fonts on 1600x1200 screen with chalkboard settings on Linux at home. For some reason i could never get the same feeling.

In windows, small fonts are easily readable. I have no problem reading them. Therefore i make it so that X lines fits to screen.

In linux, if i make X lines fit to screen it hurts my eyes. If i make the fonts big enough not to hurt my eyes then only X/2 lines fits into screen.

I just wanted to know what everybody else is using.
Thanks alot for your answer.
I really appreciate it.

i use EnvyCodeR as can be seen here: http://pezra.barelyenough.org/blog/2008/07/envy-code-r/

I find this scales correctly as long as X knows the proper DPI of your display.  If your fonts are too small at 1600x1200 (or was it 1920x1200?) then I think X isn't getting the correct information from either the font or your display.

There was a discussion on the topic of "favorite fonts and colors" about 2ish months ago.  Lots of great fonts and schemes were posted.  I highly recommend searching for that thread!

Plain old Bitstream Vera Sans Mono.

I know it's the default and boring, but all the special programmer fonts I've tried just don't do it for me.

I usually use it at 9pt (which can fit 63 lines on my 1920x1200 screen).  I find it scales very nicely down to 8pt (almost 73 lines on my screen).  Lower than that is readable, but a little too difficult for my eyes.

Hi,

When I start SlickEdit with the command 'vs', I get the default font which is hard to read.
Starting SlickEdit with 'vs_sharedxft' gives me an anti-aliased font.

Maybe 'vs_sharedxft' makes the fonts look better?
