Licensing oopsie
« on: May 01, 2009, 09:31:15 AM »
Fired up SE today and the first thing it does, is pop up the  "No license found" dialog to demand I install, buy, or ask for a license. I point it at the one I already installed and it's accepted. I hope it's not going to do this every couple of months...

Happened to me as well.  The beta license period expired on 30 April so I guess that's why.

I thought it might be something like that, but this was a kosher full license. The beta was uninstalled before the release was put on, so the license would have disappeared with the uninstall (and I made sure the install directory was empty). I also recall the install app demanding a license before it would continue.

Me, too.  I do recall seeing "beta" in my serial number and NOT selecting a license file when 2009 went gold.  But I downloaded a standalone license at the time, figuring this would happen.  I simply pointed to the non-beta license and it's good to go.

I'd bet dollars to donuts this is happening to 'most of the Beta users and none of the folks who simply waited for it to go gold.

Jim.

However much I might be inclined to agree with you, I can't pass up the change of a free donut so my money plate says otherwise :)

That should have just been the beta license timing out. We do not (necessarily) uninstall the license file when you uninstall SlickEdit. When a license file is installed using the License Manager, it is copied down into the Application Data folder on Windows (not sure where we copy it on Linux...), which is where we look the next time SlickEdit is installed. Uninstalling SlickEdit won't remove the license from that location.

SlickEdit will also look for a license file in the win/bin directory. If you copy the license file there, it will not need to be installed using the License Manager. That file will be uninstalled as part of the SlickEdit uninstall process. The downside to this approach is that you will have to copy a license file back the win/bin directory each time you upgrade to v14.0.1, v14.0.2, etc.

So, depending on how you apply the license file, a clean install directory does not necessarily mean that the license has been removed.

@dunkers: Though our installer used to request a license, it shouldn't be doing that now. SlickEdit checks for a license each time it is launched and displays the License Manager if one cannot be found. That is the point where you should be prompted for a license, not as part of the installer. It should come up after you click "Finish" on the installer if you have the "Launch SlickEdit..." checkbox checked. Though I'm hesitant to suggest it, I'm hoping you are misremembering the sequence of events.

Now that the perpetual license has been installed, you shouldn't see any further warnings about SlickEdit 2009 not finding a license. Of course, when you upgrade to SlickEdit 2010 you will need a new license.

copied down into the Application Data folder

Ah! Yes, I completely overlooked that place. Seems I'll be sticking to my diet after all.

I can run off a video if... no, it's tempting but you are correct :) In my mind the first run was merged into the install since it's similarly a one-off thing and happens at the same time.
