Thanks! I enjoyed writing it. We'll be posting articles very regularly. Some will include helpful information about SlickEdit, and others will address broader topics, like this one.

This article is a favorite topic of mine. I remember the point in my career when I noticed that there was a substantial difference between developers. I was working at Harris Space Systems on a large project. A small group of the programmers on that project were smarter/faster/better than any that I had ever met. I decided I wanted to be like them rather than like many others who were merely good.

Since then, I've had the good fortune to work a lot of different places on my different projects. And I still see this big difference in talent. Working at SlickEdit, I'm very pleased to be working with the most talented team of programmers I've ever worked with. I see a similar set of traits in our customers, who share the same passion for coding.

I'm really curious what the article was about, but I'm getting a 404 error when I click the link.  Does anyone have a copy?

The Wayback Machine does (at least I believe this is the article being referred to): http://web.archive.org/web/20070222054814/http://www.slickedit.com/content/view/429/93/

This article by Perter Norvig :
http://norvig.com/21-days.html

and this GDC speech by Mike Abrash :

are also similar and essential programmer reading.

It comes down to a simple concept for mastery in anything : Deliberate Practice.  Erricson's work on the subject (the book "The Road To Excellence") is considered the standard on the subject :
