F1 to open google/search?MSDN
« on: July 21, 2009, 06:54:53 pm »
Is there a macro or (other configuration) to get the F1 key to open up a search at google for MSDN docs?
I see some special config for Visual Studio doc (I could probably reverse engineer the code by the time that comes up), but nothing to open browser.

Thanks

I use this WebHelp macro, which I bound to Shift+F1.  The default search URL is Bing, but you can define it to be whatever you like (see comments at top of the macro file).

The current "F1 for MSDN Help" feature only works with locally installed MSDN help collections. ( Help > Configure F1 MSDN Help ). But if you set up your MSDN viewer up to pull web content, that may get you closer.

The search URL in the WebHelp macro can be configured.  You can point it at MSDN on the web by setting def_web_search_url to "http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Search/en-US/?Query=".  Only works when you're online, but it's good enough for my needs.

Chris, that WebHelp was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
