failure to startup on ver 15.0.0.5
« on: June 04, 2010, 02:48:50 pm »
I have had multiple occurances of the editor failing to start and shuting down. I have to create a new version of vrestore.slk.

It seems to occur after sessions that I have  been viewing files in temporary directories such as those files loaded from version control etc.

I will attach the error dialog and the vrestore.slk file from the last failure. I have not loaded the last hotfix sel_1500_5 yet.

Here is the system info from the help menu

I'm still having this problem too (15.0.0.6).  I loaded the Chrome browser source code, chrome.sln, successfully a few times.  The third time I opened the workspace I get the following crash:

Unhandled exception at 0x10134770 in vs.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xffffffff.

The crash is in vsapi.dll

As mentioned above, the only way to get SlickEdit working again is to delete vrestore.slk.

Hi George,

Are you using Perforce for version control as well?

If so, can you go to www.slickedit.com/supportcase and create a Support Case please?

Thanks,

Nope, I'm not using Perforce for version control.  The Chrome solution I loaded was checked out using Subversion.  I've also had this happen on small test solutions that didn't have any version control associated with them at all.

This has also been happening to me weekly on v15+.

In my case it seemed I regularly crashed when I changed the Editor Windows New window width and height options to "Use current window to create custom size" and, knock on wood, seems OK again leaving the options 'Default'.

Perhaps just dumb luck,
Alan

This is happening to me as well. Mostly I'm using SVN, but I do have one project with no version control.  I'm using 15.0.0.6 now, but it first happened in a previous version, possibly 15.0.0.5.

Recently, I saved a vrestore.slk file that I thought worked, in case it happened again.  When it happened today, I replaced the vrestore.slk file with the one that I had "backed up", but it didn't work..still crashses.

Basically, the only feedback is the window (and contents) start to be drawn, and then the system reports "Segmentation Fault (core dumped)".  Although I can't find a corefile.

Dan,

I use SVN as well - Tortoise SVN, not through SlickEdit.

The crash at startup is occurring due to the value in the PIP field in the vrestore.slk file:

a working PIP:
PIP: 0 10293240010310602

a crashing PIP:
PIP: 0 10292950017483551

As a workaround, you can replace this single line rather than blowing away your entire .slk file every time SlickEdit crashes at startup.

I'm using SlickEdit 15.0.0.6 on Linux and had this problem for the first time today. When I started SlickEdit the screen appeared briefly, then the program exited with a segmentation fault.

The tip about the "PIP" in the vrestore.slk file was the answer for me. I deleted this line and SlickEdit started working again - thanks George.

I don't think this has anything to do with version control because I haven't been using the version control features in SlickEdit recently.

Even using the "crashing line" given by gmenhorn, I have been unable to reproduce this issue.  If it crops up again, please let me know so I can send you a file to run which will yield some debug information.

It crops up all the time.  You can go ahead and send me the file and I'll get you the information you need.

Could you check your configuration directory for a file called pipDB.vtg?  Would it be possible for you to email it to sgaskins (at) slickedit dot com?  If it's too big for that, let me know and I'll set up an FTP for you.
