Dialog slide-out time vs keyboard focus
« on: July 28, 2010, 03:06:48 pm »
I have my 'Open files using' setting set to 'Smart Open'. When I hit Ctrl+O, the dialog begins sliding out. I immediately begin to type. However, this usually places 1 letter into the active buffer. It would be nice if the open-file dialog got keyboard focus immediately upon me hitting Ctrl+O (and when it visually begins sliding out); not when it has finished sliding out. Is there any current setting that  would accomplish that?

Using SlickEdit Version 14.0.2.2 on Windows XP SP3.

Some changes were made in 15.0 that make this less likely. Unfortunately those changes are not hotfixable. You have 3 options:

1. Upgrade to v15 (2010). Not a problem if you are on maintenance of course.
2. Speed up the animation on autoshown tool windows (View>Tool Windows>Customize, Options tab).
3. Turn off animation for autoshown tool windows (same path as #2).

Turning off animations was the first thing I did... It makes the entire editor respond quickly to my every command..

Thank you for the prompt responses. Turning off animations had the desired effect.

Nice.  I like animations (in general) as they tend to smooth out the "flow" of work for me. But responsiveness is more important to me, and with all that Slick does, I can do without the animations if it means better responsiveness.  And this certainly does.

I turned animations off as well:  Animations are unusable over Remote Desktop Connection, it can take 30+ seconds for the window slide animation to finish rendering over RDC.
