Does "vsmerge.exe -h" work for you? (it fails at our site)
« on: October 28, 2010, 05:48:39 pm »
Hi,

Product Support can't reproduce this bug even though it happens for me (SlickEdit 15.0.1.3) and at least two of my coworkers (SlickEdit 13.0.2.0).  Therefore, I thought I'd ask the community to sanity check me, and find out if it is only broken at our workplace, or if it only works at SlickEdit, Inc.

If you'd like to participate, please open a Windows XP command line (cmd.exe), cd to the "win" directory in your SlickEdit installation, and e.g.:

C:\Program Files\SlickEdit\15.0.1\win> vsmerge -h

When I or my coworkers run this, we get no visual response, although I do hear the Windows "exclamation" sound.  When Ashley of SlickEdit product support did this, he saw the attached screenshot (however, she is running Vista, not XP):

Thanks for answering my poll! :)
-Pete

Works for me in 32 bit Win7 Ultimate.

You've probably already checked this, but I'll toss it out there anyway:  When a program doesn't even launch for a coworker, I'll often ask them to scan the disk (or at least the PATH variable) for multiple programs that have the same executable file name.  Surprisingly often, though less than half the time, it will turn out that there is another program with the same executable name being launched unintentionally, or that there is an older version getting launched but which no longer works properly because a newer version has replaced some dependencies.

Whoa  - and all this time I thought Ashley was a guy!  What about Shannon then :)

Forgot to mention  - I get no visible dialog, just a ding-dong sort of sound.  Win XP , slick 14.0.2

Graeme,

Well, Shannon signs "Mr. Shannon Stamp", which I confess was a surprise to me.  Is SlickEdit product support actually based in Ireland?  Wikipedia says Shannon started in thu US as a female name, but has become unisex in Ireland.   Wikipedia says Ashley is an Irish male name, but recently became popular as a female name in the US.  So, how about Graeme? :)

Thanks for your poll reply :)

I can confirm that both Shannon and Ashley are men. We all know that has no affect on the quality of support you receive, but it is a natural human tendency to form mental images of the people we interact with.

To that end, I am a 7 foot tall Klingon. Kapla!

PS vsmerge -h works just fine for me on Windows 7 32-bit. Sounds like this might be an XP-specific issue.

FYI (and speaking of pronouns, that FYI stands for "for y'all-all's info" :), I've forked the "Shannon and Ashley both male?" tangent to a new thread: http://community.slickedit.com/index.php?topic=6473.msg27129#msg27129

I can confirm that Scott W. is a 7 foot tall Klingon. Shocked me the first time I met him. But even as a Klingon he had a very dapper hat. ;)
