kubuntu 12.04 problem with Slickedit 2011 16.0.3.0

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04 and I just upgraded this monring from version 11.

I found that slickedit is having a problem with the upgrade. 

When I right click in the source window, I don't get the drop down menu anymore.  Also, when I scroll the souce window it's very choppy.

I've tried applying the hotfix for 16.0.3.0, but it's still having the same problems.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unless you have maintenance and support you can report bugs but you can't get official support. It's a shame that Linux seems to have upgrade problems a lot.

I see that Kubuntu 12.04 just came out a few days ago.  Do you get the choppy scrolling in any other applications?  Does right click work in any of the toolbars or dialogs such as the find dialog?  Has anyone reported these kind of problems on the Kubuntu forums?

It's a shame that Linux seems to have upgrade problems a lot.

Do you think Linus'es antipathy for binary compatibility might have a bit to do with that?  There is a lot to like about open source in general, but one of the downsides of design/maintenance by herds of cats is that ABI stability is usually the first casualty, because "you can just recompile" when the ABI changes, even if the source compatibility is there.

I've tried this on two different installs of Ubuntu 12.0.4. One is in a virtual machine, the other is a desktop machine.

The desktop install works perfectly.

The virtual machine (VMWare) install couldn't display the context menu and due to the slower graphics output couldn't keep up with the keyboard when I had it maxed out (not bad though). It looks like the problem with the context menu not coming up is some sort of mouse driver bug. Combo boxes in Ubuntu unity (like the ones in the Display settings) wouldn't work properly. SlickEdit isn't the only application having problems. I don't think I installed the latest updates on this install though.

Are you running in a virtual machine (VMWare)? Did you install all the Ubuntu updates?

Attached is a work around for the mouse driver bug which works with SlickEdit 16.0.3. This won't help you with things like combo boxes not working in other applications. Use Macro>Load Module... to load this macro.

Well, no.  I finally went from 10.04 to 12.04, and SE is kind of a mess.  The vim emulation keys don't all work.  F2 doesn't reliably save.  Modify status on the file tabs doesn't reset.  The screen flickers madly.  Hitting vim search ( / ) locks it up.  Startup takes a minute or two.  This could be laid at Unity, which is roundly criticised.  I was using vanilla Gnome on 10.04 and had no problems.

A while ago I had weird problems with Ubuntu Unity due to a graphics driver problem. If I used Unity 2d instead of Unity 3d, then things worked fine. I chose it from the log in screen. It's similar to choosing a different window manager. It looks like the Unity 2D option was removed in version 12.10 (not sure if there's a work around). If you google for "Ubuntu Unity 2d" you'll find that the problems are related to the graphics card. If Unity 2d is still there for you, give it a try.

The problems you describe are most likely your graphics driver/graphics card.

It took a bit to find that button (not that it looks it is a button)!!  Start up is still glacial, but SE/vim works much better.  Good thing I'm not using it for coding these days.

I think the slow start up has to do with file caching (or lack there of). An SSD would fix that and give you a whole lot of performance.
