17.0.1: list-symbols disappears immediately

When I try to use Alt-. (dot) for 'list-symbols', the symbols list appears briefly, but then disappears immediately, and does not allow selection of the appropriate completion symbol.
In case it matters, I'm using the SE-text mode emulation on 17.0.1.
Is this a general observation, or specific to my setup?

OK, this problem seems a little more complex. I wasn't dreaming exactly, but now the function 'list-symbols' seems to work. It doesn't always do what I'd want and expect, but that may be my configuration.
I'll observe the behavior and report any findings...
