I've lost count of how many releases this problem has existed...

The option to disable that particular feature is Options > Editing > Editor Windows > Abbreviate file tab captions, toggle to off.

Ok, I think I understand now.  I guess I never gave it enough thought all these years.  So the abbreviated name/tab 'always' appears next to it's 'parent' - presumably only if I sort alphabetically?

I would call it a sibling rather than a parent relationship, but yes.  The option exists to save space so that you can see more file tabs at one time in a meaningful manner.
