B4 Bug: Screen Flash when editting
« on: May 28, 2013, 10:01:42 AM »
The screen will flash at random points of time after some editing, cant determine exactly what causes it. But stop editing and it stops flashing. It looks like it clears the screen and redraws it but my PC is too quick to see what is happening.
Note scheme is set to OS/390 ISPF which is a black background.

Maybe you have this problem:

http://community.slickedit.com/index.php/topic,9066.0.html

I got this only once and never since. I don't remember seeing any flashing but given what is probably going on, there could definitely be some. Check SlickEdit's CPU utilization. You can also turn of both the horizontal and vertical scroll bar to see if the flashing goes away. If you see these issues, you have the same problem. We are still trying to reproduce this problem here.

Tried turning of scroll bars made no difference.
Have restarted the PC which made no difference.
Found that toggling the full screen would cause the problem almost all the time, but not all the time. Also the timing after the change is variable, usually within 10 seconds.
Looking at the screen it appears to clear and then redraw every thing (i.e. menus and bars) which makes it look like it flashes.
Attached vrestore.slk
Project was created new with B4 but the installation of B4 picked up settings from Slick edit 15 configuration (Which was the only installation of slick edit ever on this machine).
Screen lay out is a single file with pr0ject and  search/build tabed dialog at he bottom
CPU loading did not change

Please post your help about info.

Try a default config and see if you still get the problem ("vs -sc tempdir"). Switch to your color scheme if that makes it easier to see the problem.

Used "vs -sc tempdir" and then loaded old project (did not change color config) and switch back and forth from full screen. same problem.
Deleted the tempdir and restarted using "vs -sc tempdir" and back and forth from full screen. same problem.
Note this is a duel screen system run on a laptop with  screen 2 on the external port as the main screen and also on the left side i.e 2,1. I have seem some older programs go wrong (displaying information on the wrong screen or off the viewable desktop area some) with this configuration but I don't think it has any bearing on this problem.
Hope this helps
Paul

Does it matter which screen the editor is on? I'm guessing it wouldn't. It would more likely depend on the machine and video driver. I'm trying to reproduce this with no luck so far.

Can you try it on any other machine? If it happens on a different machine, then I need to change my testing. Otherwise, I need to try some different machines.

Tried B5 on the laptop (Orginal Machine) and problem could not be seen.
Tried B5 on my other machine and problem was there.
This is a completely different Desktop machine running Winows 7 64Bit with a different graphics card.

Tried B6 32 and 64 Bit. Still there. Tried Default colour, is there but less promonent because the windows looks like its turned completely white befor redrawing.

Sounds like 2 of the 3 machines you have reproduce this problem.

Not sure what's different. Here are some things you can try:

* Start with a default config "vs +new -sc tempdir"
* Change your color scheme to ISPF so you can see the problem

See if you can reproduce the problem but DO NOT open your workspace/project. Just open files and use full screen mode.

If you can still reproduce the problem, do the following:
  * Run with the config you produced above
  * Close all tool windows
  * Close all toolbars

See if you can reproduce the problem but DO NOT open your workspace/project. Just open files and use full screen mode.

Thanks

I think I confused you, there are just 2 machines
   1) The laptop which is the original  machine which does not seem To exhibit the problem running B5 but did on 4. I need to do some more testing on this but can't till Monday.
   2) the second machine which is the workstation I use at home which has the problem on B4,B5 & B6 (Just tested B4).

Problem with Uninstall .
Get the following error :-

SlickEdit 2013 x64 Beta4 (18.0.0)
Warning 1910. Could not remove Shortcut SlickEdit
- 2013x64 Beta4.lnk. Verifythat the shortcut file exists
and that you can access it.

Continuing some times removes the Desktop Icon and some times not.

Using B6 on the work station
Started default by running "vs +new -sc tempdir". Changed to new ISPF

Closed all windows except Tool bars.
Switched from normal to full screen and back Got the following problem twice in a row before it cleared :-

 Invalid object handle
tbview.ex 3045 tbview:autorestore_toolbars(r,39 2 0 0 37 0 N 0 2,FULLSCREEN_TOOLBARS)   p_window_id: 37   p_object: OI_EDITOR   p_name:
tbview.ex 6024 tbview:_tbAutoRestoreFromView(37,1)   p_window_id: 37   p_object: OI_EDITOR   p_name:
tbview.ex 6608 fullscreen(1)   p_window_id: 5   p_object: OI_FORM   p_name:

Note this is the second off the errors which looks the same as the first.
I think this is unrelated but should be investigated.

Problem persisted.

Hid all task bars
Problem persisted.

Closed and restart b6
Problem persisted.

switched to full screen and caused immediate loss off focus
Problem persisted.

At no point was the project or any source file loaded.

Thanks, this helps some. Just so I understand better, you don't need to edit a file to see blinking of the menu bar and you had all the tool windows and tool bars closed.
