Where'd my windows go?

Using SE v18. I had about 10 edit windows open. I "split vertically" one of the windows. Then I wanted to remove the split so I clicked on Tools->One Window, and all my edit windows disappeared except one, and all the tabs across the top that showed the open files disappeared. And I can't get any of it back. What's the secret?

One Window closes all the windows (not the files) except the window you are in, leaving you with...one window.

If you want all your windows rolled up into a single tab group, then use Window>Untile instead. You can also bind the untile_windows command to a key if you prefer.

Actually, it appears that all the files were closed except the one I was in. If I click on the Window menu item, at the bottom it shows all the open files. There is only one file.

Clicking Window->Untile did bring back the tab bar, but it only has one tab for the one open file.

I forgot to ask. How do you "unsplit" a window?

One Window does not close files, just windows. What does Document>List Open Files show?

Also, if your 'Files per window' setting (Options>Editing>Editor Windows) is set to 'Multiple files share window', then you would typically only see new windows when you perform splits or create new horizontal/vertical tabgroups explicitly.

Finally, your 'Zoom (hide tabs) when one window' setting determines when the tabbar is hidden. By default it is set to 'Auto' which means it remembers the last zoom state. Since you performed One Window, the window was automatically zoomed and that was remembered.

Ok, Document->List Open Files does show all the files I had open. But they didn't come back with the tab bar, so it doesn't do me much good. I still have to Open->File for each file to get it back.

The "Files Per Window" is set at the default of "One File per Window". I've never changed it.

And I don't understand what you meant by zoom. I've never used that "feature".

They did not come back because you did One Window which closes all but the current window. That is why I suggested you use Window>Untile if you want to instead "roll up" your tabs into a single tab group. Using Untile will not close any windows.

Zoom (via Window>Zoom Toggle, or right-clicking on a document tab) will "zoom" the current window so that it is the only window you see, and also hide the tabbar. You can compare it to "Maximize" in the old MDI scheme.

Matthew did this video to introduce some of the new MDI features during the beta. There have been some changes/enhancements since it was done, but it is still very informative. It covers common operations (including zoom):
