A forum search reveals that this question has arisen in various incarnations, but I haven't seen it in precisely this form. Using the 'Send to' menu, as suggested in an older thread, is not an appropriate solution to restore SE's installation defaults for file type associations. A Windows registry settings file was offered back in 2007, but I don't think it's wise to load those old settings in Windows 8.

Problem: SE 16 was installed and then I installed v18 trial as well. After uninstalling SE 18 trial, Slickedit no longer appears in Windows 8 'Control Panel > Default Programs > Set your default programs.' Also, all file type associations in SE 'Options > File Options > Associate File Types' are gone completely. I'd rather use Control Panel to set all standard SE default file type associations (installation defaults) in one step rather than having to set associations one at a time in 'Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program' or in SE 'File Options > Associate File Types.' It's too late to revert to an old Windows Restore Point. Any solutions, short of reinstalling SE 16?

The related registry item on WindowsXP is under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\.
You can check the value of
if this item exists.
Or you can delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\vs.exe and redo "Set your default programs".

I'm using WindowsXP, I'm not sure this will help.  :-\

Any solutions, short of reinstalling SE 16?
How about just a "Repair" on SE 16?

Thank you, Phil and wangsitan. I'll try your suggestions. I'm using Windows 8. I'll definitely try a Repair of Slickedit 16 installation. I forgot about that option.
