Cannot Open more tabs from Search Results
« on: September 09, 2013, 05:30:49 pm »
I've just done a multi-file search and want to open the files that were found. When I click on the found line in the Search Results tab a file will open but, when I click on the found line in the next file listed in the Search Results tab the file opens but replaces the previously opened file. How to I get SlickEdit to open each file from Search Results in their own tab? I'm sure this has worked in the past and I don't understand what could have changed.

Thank you,

Dave F.

Are file tabs currently being displayed? If you're not seeing any tabs at all, first thing to check is to make sure you're not in "multiple files share window" mode. Go to the Window menu and look for the "One Window" menu item. It should not be checked.

And if you're still not seeing tabs, make sure you're not in a zoomed window state. Try the Window > Zoom Toggle menu item to make sure.

Thank you for responding. Here is the behavior I see following your suggestion:

I originally had two tabs showing at the top. I clicked on Window->Zoom Toggle then the two tabs dissappeared. I clicked it again to get the two tabs back.

After clicking Window->Zoom Toggle twice I clicked another found line in the Search Results window and the found file appeared in a third tab. When I clicked on yet another found line (a fourth file) the fourth file replaced the file in the third tab.

I again clicked Window ->Zoom Toggle twice and then I was able to get a fourth tab but then the file in the fourth tab would be replaced if additional found files were clicked.

It seems like I am in some sort of mode that replaces the current tab with new files rather than opening new tabs. The Window->Zoom Toggle command must de-select the current tab.

Does this make sense? Any idea how I get out of this mode? Closing and reopening SlickEdit doesn't change this behavior.

Thanks,

Dave F.

..further experimentation shows that if I click outside the latest window I can open a new tab but not until I do so.

Is it possible you have "Automatically close visited files" enabled?  Although it seems to only show up in the Bookmarks configuration, it seems to act on a wider basis than just bookmarks, and your symptoms sound like that behavior.

Correct! I had that option checked for some reason. Once I turned that off the behavior went back to what I'm used to.

Thank you!
