I finally found time to upgrade to v18. It was much faster and smoother than I'd feared, I should have done it a long time ago.
One question:
I can't find how to configure how Tab and Space are displayed. I can choose whether they're displayed, but it seems as if I can no longer choose what the visual representation is for them.
The dot for Space is fine.
But the horizontal bar for Tab is very intrusive and distracting, yet I need to know where Tabs are present.
Q: How can I get a single character for Tabs again?Or at least make the horizontal line dotted, or a gradient that trails off to the background color, or at a bare minimum be not so long? If it were even 2 pixels shorter then it wouldn't touch the characters following it, and there would be some visual separation. But ideally go back to taking up only one character, instead of 8 characters. My eyes hurt and it visually no longer looks like there's ANY whitespace in the files.
