Please add an option to "DON'T CHANGE THINGS I TYPE"
« on: February 13, 2014, 05:11:14 pm »
Slickedit is great, but every time I install it I have to go through a week of finding and turning off about a thousand annoying options.
When I type something, that's what I want to see on the screen. I don't need you to:
  • Insert closing /tags
  • Add line breaks
  • Indent lines haphazardly
  • Move the cursor about, and
  • Generally go "Microsoft Word" on the automatic formatting.
This is why people hate Microsoft Word, so... don't emulate them.

Can you please add a big, easy to find checkbox, that just says "ONCE I TYPE SOMETHING, PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE IT."
Don't insert a line break unless I press enter.
Don't insert closing tags.
And don't have 1,000 options that all look very similar and all control the same things. For the love of God man.

I love Slickedit. LOVE it. And always have.
I recently had to re-install and I lost my configuration. These line-inserting shennanigans are too much.
I like the FTP upload, version control, and symbol lookup. I like the way projects are laid out and handled, for the most part. I like the coloring and highlighting and I make extensive use of macros. But...

I have just been forced to close Slickedit and use notepad.exe to finish this web site.

NOTEPAD.

Many of these features are often useful, though I agree that it can be difficult to turn off features when you don't even know what they are called.

Fortunately, Slick has a cool feature to help with this.
In the status bar, far-right there is a little icon that looks like a printed page.
It will bring up the "Notifications" window which shows a log of events.

When some nifty auto-formatting feature does something, it puts an event in this log.
Right click on the event and there is a menu to take you to the correct place in the configuration dialog to change the settings for it.

This notification dialog itself can be disabled - and I don't know what the default setting it.
Goto Tools->Options.
Search for "Notification"
Select "Application Options->Notifications".
Set "Turn all notifications to: Status line icon, no pop-up".

I totally understand the original posters issue. SlickEdit needs something in the quick start dialog that shows all the typing assistance features in one place and allows you to disable some or all of them. Sorry we haven't gotten to this yet.

We are far from done with substantial changes to the product.
