Title: Can't login ... no, wait, yes I can, no I can't.

When I try to login on the "main" Slickedit home page (http://slickedit.com/) I am not able to log in with an account and password that works just fine here in "The Community" (...hmmm 'The Community' -- sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel....)  Anyway, I can login here ---> http://community.slickedit.com/index.php

Are these site independent?

Yes, the sites are independent.  Anyone can have an account here.  On the main SE site you have to be a customer.
