Title: backup history not working
Post by: Graeme on September 15, 2021, 04:57:58 am
In the attached zip file are 4 files.
DA-000006-orig.txt   -  the starting file
DA-000006-Copy1.txt    - the modified file

DA-000006.txt.vsdelta2,  DA-000006.txt    - the two files from the backup folder.

The starting file has 8000 odd lines with "enumerate command" used to make the lines 0,1,2...8000
The modified file has 3 changed lines and 3 inserted lines.  Backup history diff finds only the changed lines, it does not find the inserted lines.

I've set up putting the files in the backup folder.  The current local version of the file should be *-Copy1.txt, right?

Are you comparing the local version DA-000006-Copy1.txt to version 3 in the Backup History archive?

hopefully I'm not confused.
here's some new files, the names should be self explanatory this time.
version zero has just the enumerate 0 -8000 or so

version 1 has 3 changed lines 800, 1200, 1600  approx

version 2 has 3 inserted lines  - aaa   bbb   ccc

when I compare the current file with version zero I see only 3 diffs - the 3 changed lines - should be six diffs.

when I compare current file with version 1 I  see only 3 diffs - the 3 changed lines - this is wrong.

when I compare current file with version 2 I  see 3 diffs - the 3 inserted lines - which is correct.

DA-000011-actual-file.txt is the local file, correct?

Are the most up to date version (DA-000011.txt) and archive file (DA-000011.txt.vsdelta2) the same as before?

yes, "actual" is the file I created (but without the "actual" bit) - it's same as DA-000011.txt.
These are different to the first files I posted.

You can't reproduce the problem?

Did this get resolved?

Sorry for the slow response.  I think what I'm seeing is correct, but I will be in touch later today.

This is what I get, this is what you expected right?  I do see all 6 differences.

No it's not what I expect.  You should see all six changes when you compare with version zero (oldest), not with version three.  Slow is fine :) - I was expecting you to say you had reproduced the problem so thought I must be missing something.

Maybe try these steps yourself - I posted these with DA-00011.txt.

If you look at the Version combo box above the current symbol combo box, above the file on the left, does it say "Local File", or have a version number.  If it's the version number, it will be consecutive versions.

ahhhh...  so that's what the problem is.  I didn't notice the combo boxes showing the version.  They both show version numbers.  I'm expecting that it should diff the local file with the version that I double click on - I think this is what previous versions of slick used to do.  If I select "local file" I get the differences that I expect.  I suspect that the majority of the time you want to diff the local file with one other revision, not two revisions.  In any case it's not intuitively obvious how to get a diff of the local file against an older revision - a lot of people won't notice the combo boxes  - even if you do notice, it's very fiddly to get the diff that you want.  My opinion anyway.

The help file says there is a context menu option "Compare version X to version Y"  -  but I don't see this option in the right click menu.  The help file says this option "changes the mode of the dialog to always diff adjacent versions.".  How do you get it back to not diffing adjacent versions?

Change the combo box with the version to "Local".

Yes I know but that doesn't do what I want because only one of the revisions has a combo box.

If you need to compare non-adjacent versions, use the Backup History tool window.  You can select two items, and compare them from the context menu.

I suspect the change from slick V25 will trip people up like it did me.  People will be expecting that double click of an entry in the backup history list gets diffed against the local file, not against the next one in the list.

We suspect you are right too.  We changed it back for Beta 4.
