SlickEdit® / Re: typed characters are appearing out of order
« Last post by Chris Nisbet on September 30, 2023, 12:47:11 AM »
I've just given that QT5 version a blast and whaddaya know - the characters are turning up in the order I type them.

Everything seems OK even when using my original SE configuration, although I only gave it a very cursory once-over.
What I notice is that with my large test file open and when typing a sequence of 4 chars that do exist in the file, the search box populates quite quickly, but when typing a 4 char sequence that does not exist, one CPU maxes out for about 5 seconds and then the input box populates with the 4 chars. In both cases they do appear in the correct order though. I suppose the delay is to be expected because there is a lot of data to sift through before concluding that the characters do not exist.

FYI: CPU is Intel i7 @3.4GHz. 16GB RAM
Not much going on on the machine CPU-wise. CPU load is pretty low until I start typing in the search box, then one core goes to 100% for a while, dropping back when I stop typing. I can enter something like 4 characters (in quick succession) that either match something in the open file or not, and ~50% of the time they'll turn up out of order in the search box (the first char is correct).

Clark is right, for the 2nd scenario with "Find and Replace", there is a "Select Text to Paste" window in the gnome looking glass window list. Unfortunately, I'm not smart enough to tease more information out of the lg tool at this point.  Not sure if this is helpful, but the clipboard window usually shows up on the screen to the left of the slickedit window when I use if from other contexts, though I'm not sure if that matters much here.

Similarly, there seems to be a diff window hiding somewhere too for the first scenario with the "Reload Modified Files" dialog.

It doesn't matter whether the launched from dialog is modal. The dialog being displayed for "Diff select" is modal. The Clipboards dialog (Ctrl+Shift+V) is also modal. The modal dialog is probably hidden behind the SlickEdit main window. If you unmaximize the main window and maybe even move it around, you should be able to find the modal dialog.

Yes, I work with the SlickEdit window maximized on the middle monitor. The “Reload Modified Files” dialog is modal, the “Find and Replace” isn’t.

Yeah, normally my fan spins up and sounds like a jet engine when things bog down.. then I check top and free.

I fired it up with your command line and the keyboard is fine.

I haven't seen this happen again, so maybe it was just a one off.. if I see it more, I'll regularly run it the way you said.

I'm wonder if you have SlickEdit maximized and/or the dialog is showing up being a SlickEdit window? It sounds like a modal dialog box is running which is why SlickEdit is still responding to key strokes/events.

Thanks, that's a big help.  I'll update if I find a workaround, but it will likely need to be a fix in the next drop.

I have attached two (of many) vs crash reports, one for "Bus Error: 10" and the other for "Segmentation Fault: 11".  Both are for mac-arm beta3.
