B6: Can floating Tool Windows be combined?
« on: June 04, 2013, 02:56:30 AM »
Win64:
Floating source code tabs can be combined easily by dragging one over the other. And I like how I can differentiate between dragging the title bar of the window, versus dragging the tab (although I will whine about the additional screen real estate :).

But this same functionality does not seem to extend to floating Tools Windows (e.g. Output, Preview, Defs, etc.), even though I can dock them to the same part of the main window, and have tabs show up. When I drag the floating Output window over the floating Preview window, they do not get combined.

Is this By Design? Or is there an option somewhere that I'm missing?

Thanks!

You can hide the tabs in a window with zoom-window (in CUI it's Shift-Ctrl-Z). That will recover some of the real estate for you.

Floating MDI windows don't support docking tool windows or tool bars yet. This is not a small job but it's a high priority on our todo list. Internally, the new document tab layout code has been designed to eventually allow this.

Tim, I'll try Zoom and see how it works out. It does have side-effects (changing the internally-subdivided panes), so I'll have to see how I like it in practice.
Clark, I'm glad to hear that it's on the todo list! I can understand that you probably won't disclose an ETA, but I'm hoping that it makes this major release.
Thanks!
