Licensing Questions
« on: January 14, 2010, 12:33:58 PM »
During my review of Slickedit, I've been confused by Slickedit licensing... some articles online seem to indicate that you must pay annually or the software just stops working...  This seems odd and frightening to me.

So, Is the license time limitted (i.e. 365 days) or is a license renewal only necessary for upgrading?

Thanks for your help!

Dustin

From long experience....

When you license the software initially, you're offered the option of purchasing support (something like $60/year, I believe).  The support gets you upgrades annually and the right to contact support for after the initial period is up. If you do not buy support, the software will NOT stop working.  You simply won't get the upgrades without buying a license.  Your version (14 right now, 15 in the first quarter) will not stop working.  (But good luck finding help for something 5 versions behind.  It's out there, but harder to find as most folks in the forum tend to be on maintenance and tend to upgrade.)

In either event, when they release a hotfix for your version, you'll get the hotfixes for free - they're generally just updated macro files.

I would strongly recommend the maintenance - it's a lot cheaper than the "new" fee, and there is generally not an upgrade option.  There are enough new features every year to make it worth the $60 (or $5/month - how I justify it).  Disclosure:  I am nothing more than a customer who wishes he had bought the maintenance the first time, and most assuredly did the second time - I need those features.

Thanks for the honest reply!  I think the website should make this much clearer...

Thanks again,

The licensing of Slickedit Core for Eclipse might be confusing the issue.  Unless the policy has changed since I last heard, Slickedit Core isn't offered with a perpetual license, it's more-or-less leased on an annual basis.  This is from an old post comparing Slickedit Plug-in (a discontinued product) and Slickedit Core:

The SlickEdit Plug-in is a perpetual license offering Maintenance and Support as an optional, additional charge. SlickEdit Core is licensed as an annual subscription, which includes a one-year Maintenance and Support Service.

Yes... I can see this confusing things a bit...  A simple sentence might be useful here:
http://www.slickedit.com/index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=121&id=52%E3%80%88=en&view=article

Slickedit Core for Eclipse does note on it's licensing page that it is an annual license:
http://www.slickedit.com/products/slickedit-core/licensing-option

Not trying to make a stink, but a commenter for an online review thought that it was an annual license which initially swayed me a bit.  I can't remember which review it was...

Thanks,
Dustin
